MARIN COUNTY, California – A California Highway Patrol car rolled over and exploded into flames on the 101 freeway, setting off ammunition inside the vehicle as the patrol officer driving it narrowly escaped with his life, officials said.
Passersby attempted to stop and help patrol officer David Hotea, but he warned them to stay away from the burning vehicle as live gun rounds exploded everywhere like fireworks, police reported.
The patrol officer lost control of his police car while on his way to assist another officer in the arrest of a drunk driver. The officer was driving an estimated 75 mph, veered across lanes and struck a concrete center median. The engine burst into flames and set off the live ammunition in the patrol car, police said.
The Southern Marin County Fire Department responded to the accident about 8:30 p.m., but stayed a safe distance from the burning vehicle. They waited about a quarter mile away allowed the fire to die out before approaching the scene. The entire police car was engulfed in flames and officials believed the car may explode.
The injured patrol officer was transported to Marin General Hospital where he was treated for unknown injuries. Responding fire officials said he was lucky to be alive.
The 101 freeway was closed for more than an hour between Spencer Avenue and Rodeo Drive in the Sausalito area of Marin County.
