WESTLAKE VILLAGE, California (April 30, 2013)  —  The pilot of a single-engine Cessna 172 aircraft was killed Monday afternoon after the small plane crashed into a mountainside following a mid-air collision with a second Cessna aircraft carrying three people, according to several news reports.

About 2 p.m., emergency workers responded to the fatal plane crash in the Santa Monica Mountains and found the male pilot dead at the scene near Mulholland Highway and Las Virgenes Road, KTLA reports.

The second aircraft was forced to land, but its pilot managed a gentle landing on its belly at the Westlake Golf Course. Fortunately, none of its three occupants were seriously injured in the Ventura County accident, however, one person was transported by ambulance to a hospital with complaints of back injuries suffered in the crash.

Police believe the two aircraft both departed from the Santa Monica Airport prior to the collision and struck one another mid-air about eight miles northeast of Ventura, KTLA reported. A small brush fire ignited in the brush surrounding the mountainside crash, but it was quickly put out by responding fire fighters.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the cause of the airplane crash.

San Diego, California (March 6, 2013) – Air traffic control errors have increased by 473% at The Southern California Terminal Radar Approach Control Facility (SCTRAF), located in Kearny Mesa. Although errors have increased throughout the nation, they are at their highest in southern California. Air traffic hubs in Florida, Houston, and Miami all saw error increases, but nothing like those at the San Diego center. This news became welcome ammunition for those criticizing federal aviation spending cuts. Federal officials insist that the increase in errors does not lead to valid safety risks. But forced federal cuts have cancelled many programs which would decrease these errors. Doug Church, a spokesman for The Air Traffic Controllers’ Association said that the budget cuts will prevent new technologies, reporting systems, and procedures from being implemented.

“This is a scary bit of information. I will be more wary when flying out of San Diego,” states West Seegmiller, founder of The Seegmiller Law Firm, a personal injury firm in San Diego.

SANTEE, California –  An Arizona family of three were killed Saturday morning in a small airplane crash into the remote Sycamore Canyon Open Space Preserve, according to a report by the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office.

William Arthur Stern Jr., 65, of Arizona was flying a Lancair IV-P turbine aircraft just after 10 a.m. on December 29 when for unknown reasons it fell from the sky and struck a hillside just west of Route 67 and east of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, according to the coroner and news reports.

His wife Jennifer Jane Stern, 53, and daughter Katelyn Jane Stern, 19, were passengers in the aircraft that left Montgomery Field in San Diego and was on route to take the family home to the Phoenix Deer Valley Airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash to determine its cause.
