GREEN ACRES, California (May 20, 2013) – A suspected drunk driver fled the scene of the collision that seriously injured nine people Saturday night including three with major injuries when his SUV crashed into a minivan on Highway 74 between Vista Place and Winchester Road, according to a press release issued by the Riverside County Fire Department

The hit-and-run driver and his passenger both attempted to flee the accident by running through the parking lot of an AM/PM convenience store. The driver hid in a trash dumpster and the passenger collapsed in the parking lot.  Police detained the driver and were considering booking him on DUI and hit-and-run charges.

Just after 9 p.m., the driver of a white Nissan Quest minivan was allegedly struck head on by a black GMC Yukon that reportedly drifted into opposing traffic. The hit-and-run driver was behind the wheel of the Yukon, according to a report by the Southwest Riverside News Network.

Three people suffered major injuries in the crash and had to be cut from the wreckage by responding fire fighters and rescue workers. A team of about 20 CAL FIRE/Riverside fire fighters and two engines responded to the crash where they used specialized equipment and a hazardous materials team to rescue the numerous victims involved in the accident.

Paramedics transported the injured victims in five separate ambulances to local hospitals for treatment.

Five of the victims suffered moderate injuries and one individual refused treatment for minor injuries sustained in the crash.

Police closed down the westbound lanes of Highway 74 at Winchester Road as debris and hazardous materials were removed and cleaned up from the roadway.

MIRA MESA, California (May 14, 2013) – According to an article in 8NewsNow San Diego, a woman has been arrested in Mira Mesa after she crashed her car into several parked vehicles. The woman, believed to be DUI, smashed into several parked cars that were parked on Westonhill Drive near the intersection of Aquarius, at about 12:30 a.m. in Mira Mesa.

The woman’s white SUV was swerving all over the place, as the woman kept trying to over-correct, causing her to slam into the parked row of carts. Witnesses stopped the woman as she got out of her car, took her keys, and prevented her from getting away. Police arrived at the scene and arrested her for suspicion of drunk driving.  No injuries have been reported.

“Fortunately no injuries were reported, but it could have been so much worse,” states West Seegmiller, owner of the Seegmiller Law Firm, a personal injury law firm in San Diego.

PALM DESERT, California (May 13, 2013) — An unlicensed driver was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving Friday after he reportedly caused a 3-vehicle injury traffic accident on Monterey Avenue at Dinah Shore Drive, according to a press release issued by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

About 4:45 p.m. on May 10, 2013, Joseph William Knyvett, 32, of La Quinta was driving his Ford Explorer northbound on Monterey Avenue when he collided with the driver of a Ford Mustang who was traveling eastbound on Dinah Shore Drive. The impact of the crash caused the Explorer to overturn onto its driver’s side. The Mustang spun around and crashed into a Chevrolet Blazer that was stopped at red traffic light on the westbound side of Dinah Shore Drive, the report said.

Witnesses who saw the traffic accident came to the aid of Knyvett who was trapped in his vehicle following the crash. The bystanders managed to life the vehicle into the upright position back  on all four wheels, the report said. Knyvett was not injured in the crash, however, the driver of the Mustang was moderately injured and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Knyvett was arrested on DUI charges and driving without a valid license. Palm Desert Police booked Knyvett into the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning, California.

Police say the Explorer and the Mustang both sustained major damage, but the Chevrolet Blazer had only minor damage due to the crash.

Police closed down the westbound lanes of Dinah Shore Drive for about one hour as they investigated the crash and debris was cleaned up from the roadway.
Knyvett was booked at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on DUI charges and driving without a valid license.

“Fortunately no one was killed in this traffic accident,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “Drunk drivers are extremely dangerous and are the cause of thousands of deaths every year on our busy roadways.”

Victims who are injured in a crash with a drunk driver may recoup their financial losses even if the DUI driver did not have insurance if they have uninsured motorist coverage on their own policy.

A personal injury attorney can help anyone navigate the complex legal system and work as an advocate to ensure victims of these types of crashes are fairly compensated for all of their losses. Typically, those who are represented by an attorney in a car accident case recoup about 3.5 times more compensation for their losses than those who work directly with an insurance adjuster.

Witnesses are asked to contact Sergeant Dan Devinny at the Palm Desert Police Department, at (760) 836-1654, or they can call in anonymously at (760) 341-STOP (7867).

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (May 11, 2013) –  More than 600 people paid tribute to their loved ones who were injured or died due to the actions of drunk drivers on Saturday morning in the annual Walk Like MADD Orange County fundraiser in Huntington Beach, according to Desiree Garcia, of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Orange County.

The event raised more than $114,000 this year to help support victims of drunk drivers with year-round programs and services such as victim support, educational materials and public awareness campaigns.

Many of those attending wore tributes to those they had lost on matching T-shirts, they held banners up with the names of their love ones and mostly kept their memories alive by coming together at the annual walk.

“I was deeply touched by the mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters who were all here supporting one another as they walked today,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, one of many sponsors who supported the walk and MADD at today’s walk. “

Despite all the public awareness about the tragedies that are the result of drunk drivers, there will always be people who get behind the wheel after drinking and sadly there will be people who are injured or killed.

MADD reports that alcohol impairment was four times higher during the night (37 percent) than during the day (9 percent) among drivers who were involved in fatal crashes in 2010.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, estimates there are roughly 300,000 incidents of drinking and driving every day in the United States.

Still the supporters of MADD believe that their efforts are worth it.

Indeed, since the founding of MADD in 1980, the number of drunk driving deaths has been cut in half.

MISSION VIEJO, California (May 8, 2013) –Ana Martinez, 36, of Trabuco Canyon was killed Tuesday night after a suspected repeat drunk driver crashed head-on into her minivan while driving the wrong way on Santa Margarita Parkway, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.

Just before midnight on May 7, William Carroll, 42, of Mission Viejo was driving his red and black Ford 250 pickup truck when he turned into opposing traffic on Santa Margarita Parkway. Carroll allegedly crashed head-on into Martinez’s white Toyota Sienna minivan.

Williams, a mother of three children ages 7 to 14 years old, died at the scene of the crash. Paramedics transported  Williams by ambulance to Mission Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. His injuries are not life-threatening.
