WESTMINSTER, California – A hit and run driver is being sought after a multiple vehicle traffic accident involving roughly eight vehicles resulted in several injuries Tuesday morning on the eastbound State Route 22 freeway at Euclid Street, according to a report by the California Highway Patrol.
About 8:25 a.m., CHP responded one person was trapped in a blue Buick that was leaking oil after it crashed with another car. There were at least three vehicles in the No. 2 lane and three in the center divider including a gray Mazda. Police issued a SigAlert for the HOV lane and the No. 1 lane because they were blocked by the crash.
The injured person was transported to Garden Grove Medical Center for treatment of unknown injuries, according to the report.
“Those injured in a traffic accident should seek medical attention immediately,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “Also, take photographs of the scene, the vehicles involved, injuries and exchange information with all drivers in a multi-vehicle crash.”
In California, fatal traffic accidents were down 12% to 2,715 deaths in 2010 compared to 3,090 killed in 2009, according to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Additionally, national statistics show that traffic fatalities have declined in recent years across the United States, down roughly 3% to 32,885 deaths in 2010 compared to 33,883 killed in 2009.
Police investigate every car accident involving a death to determine the cause of a crash, Seegmiller explains. The investigation will seek to find out if either driver was under the influence of alcohol, distracted or if there were any circumstances that may have led to the crash that were illegal or reckless.
“Families of victims killed in car accidents not only have to cope with the loss of a loved one, but later their lives may be forever changed due to the loss of income and other costs,” said Seegmiller.
