FONTANA, California — Michael Plunkett, 69, of San Bernardino was killed after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while he was standing on the Citrus Avenue off ramp, according to a press release issued by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department-Coroner’s Division.
According to the coroner report Mr. Plunkett was hit by the driver about 3:28 .m. on the eastbound lanes of State Route 210 at Citrus Avenue.
Paramedics arriving at the scene of the crash pronounced Mr. Plunkett dead at the scene about 3:46 a.m.
The California Highway Patrol and the sheriff’s coroner division are investigating the death as a crime. Under California law, drivers involved in a crash involving injury or death are required to remain at the scene of the accident and render aid to victims and exchange identification and call for police and emergency assistance.

According to the 2010 California Statewide Integrated Traffic report there were nine people killed and 532 injured in Fontana car accidents. In San Bernardino County, there were 33 fatal pedestrian accidents and 392 injured pedestrians in 2010. Overall 203 people were killed in the county and 7,915 were injured in 2010 crashes.
