VENICE BEACH, California (August 5, 2013) – Nathan Louis Campbell, 38, of Los Angeles crashed into a busy Venice Beach boardwalk early Saturday evening where he ran over a dozen pedestrians killing an Italian tourist Alice Gruppioni, 32, and injuring the others, according to various news reports including NBC News.
A few hours later, Campbell turned himself in at a Santa Monica police station where he was booked on murder charges and is being held in lieu of $1 million bail, authorities said. His vehicle, a dark-colored Dodge Avenger, was found abandoned in a Santa Monica parking lot.
Gruppioni died at the hospital about an hour after the crash. She and her husband Christian Casadei were visiting California on their honeymoon just two weeks after they were married in Italy, NBC News reported. Casadei suffered minor injuries in the pedestrian crash. Several family members flew here from Italy and told NBC news reporters they are heartbroken over the senseless tragedy.
On Monday, one of the pedestrians struck on the Venice boardwalk Saturday remained in critical condition, two were listed in serious condition and three remained hospitalized with moderate injuries. There were also five people who were treated for minor injuries and later released from hospital.
Several of the victims were treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for undisclosed injuries.
A memorial of flowers, photographs and candles was placed on the Venice boardwalk to the victims of Saturday’s horrible crash.
“The news of this tragedy is absolutely chilling. Witnesses have described how Nathan Campbell purposely targeted these innocent people with his vehicle,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “The thoughts and prayers of our staff are with the Gruppioni family and the victims who are recovering after this despicable act of violence.”
