SAN DIEGO, California (Feb. 21, 2013) – A bicyclist suffered minor injuries Thursday morning after the rider was struck by the driver of a silver Nissan Sentra in the vicinity of the northbound Interstate 15 freeway and Via Rancho South, according to a dispatch report by the California Highway Patrol.
About 6 a.m., the CHP responded to the bicycle accident and called for the San Diego Fire Department to respond. The crash was blocking the No. 5 lane of the roadway. Paramedics were called to the scene to assist the bicycle rider with minor injuries.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention there are more than 500,000 people treated in emergency rooms due to bicycle-related injuries and roughly 700 are killed in accidents on bicycles.
Additionally, approximately 4 percent of all California accident-related fatalities (99 out of 2,715 people killed) were bicyclists, according to a report by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
“Bicyclists are certainly more vulnerable than people who ride inside a vehicle that’s why it is so important for drivers to allow riders space when passing and to slow down when they see a bicyclist up ahead,” said Attorney West Seegmiller.
