HESPERIA, California –  Harold Blahut, 62, of Hesperia was struck by a car while riding his bicycle Sunday night on the southbound lanes of Hickory Avenue, according to a press release issued by the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner’s Department.

The driver of a Volkswagen Passat was driving in the same direction at about 30 to 40 mph when for unknown reasons he hit Blahut at 8:30 p.m., the report said. Paramedics responding to the scene of the bicycle accident transported Blahut to Desert Valley Hospital where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room.

LOS ANGELES, California –  A 55-year-old bicyclist is in critical condition with major injuries after being struck by a hit and run driver Friday afternoon on Outpost Drive near Mulholland Drive, according to a Los Angeles Police Department press release.

The injured bicyclist was struck about 4 p.m. by a driver in a rust-colored vehicle described as possibly a late model Jeep Cherokee traveling southbound on Outpost Drive.  The driver fled the scene immediately after the crash without identifying themselves as required by California law. The driver faces felony hit and run charges if he is apprehended by police.

Los Angeles Fire Department Paramedics transported the injured bicyclist by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of major injuries sustained in the bicycle accident.

Witnesses are asked to contact the West Traffic Division Detective Section at 213-473-0234. During non-business hours or on weekends, calls should be directed to 1-877-LAPD-24-7 (1-877-527-3247).

According to the annual California Statewide Integrated Traffic report there were 554 fatal and 50,817 injury traffic accidents reported in Los Angeles County in 2009. Additionally, there were 2,805 fatal and 163,524 injury crashes in California in 2009.

“Bicyclists are especially vulnerable to being hit by cars on our roadways and drivers who flee such crashes are both a coward and a criminal under the law,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. “Indeed the injuries sustained by bicyclists are some of the most severe on our roads and it’s important that they receive care immediately for their injuries.”

Police investigate every car accident involving a death to determine the cause of a crash, Seegmiller explains. The investigation will seek to find out if there was anyone driving under the influence of alcohol, distracted or if there were any circumstances that may have led to the crash that were illegal or reckless.

For roughly 30 years, the legal experts at the Seegmiller Law Firm have represented hundreds of clients who were injured in traffic accidents or have lost a loved one.

If you are injured the insurance company may try to settle your claim quickly, but they do not have your best interests in mind. SAN DIEGO, California —  A 30-year-old man riding a bicycle was killed after he was struck by three separate vehicles in an early morning crash in the 6900 block of east Balboa Avenue on the overpass of the Interstate Route 805 freeway, according to a San Diego Medical Examiner Report.

According to the report, the man was riding his bicycle in the eastbound lanes of Balboa Avenue when he was struck by the driver of a Ford Expedition. The bicyclist was ejected from the bicycle and thrown into the street.  Next, the man was struck again by the drivers of two Toyota vehicles. Witnesses called 911 and paramedics responded to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead.

“Bicyclists are at a disadvantage on our busy roadways,” said San Diego Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. “Drivers rushing to work in early morning commutes need to slow down and allow enough space in passing them on the road.”

Indeed California bicyclists had sought a new law last year SB 910 that would have required motorists to provide a 3-foot buffer between them and bicyclists on our roadways. Current law requires drivers to provide a “safe distance.” However, Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed the proposed legislation on Oct. 7, 2011.

Bicycle accidents killed 109 people and injured 11,993 in California, according to the California Statewide Integrated Traffic Report.  Los Angeles County was the worst with 22 deaths and 3,725 injuries, followed by Orange County with 12 deaths and 1,199 injuries and San Diego County with nine deaths and 972 injuries.

Police investigate every car or bicycle accident involving a death to determine the cause of a crash, Seegmiller explains. The investigation will seek to find out if drivers were under the influence of alcohol, medication, drugs or distracted as well as many other circumstances that may have led to the crash that were illegal or reckless.

“Families of victims killed in bicycle accidents not only have to cope with the loss of a loved one, but later their lives may be forever changed due to the loss of income and other costs,” said Seegmiller.
