SAN DIEGO, California – Bonita High School Student Francisco Sanchez Porras was struck and killed Wednesday afternoon when he rode through a red light on 61st Street and collided with a vehicle traveling on Imperial Avenue, according to a report by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office.

The bicycle accident took place about 3:22 p.m., according to the report. Sanchez, 17, of San Diego, was on route to a local hospital when he was pronounced dead via radio communications with doctors.

According to the California Highway Patrol Statewide Integrated Traffic Report there were 109 bicyclists killed and 11,993 bicyclists injured in California in 2009.

There were nine bicycle fatalities and 972 injuries reported in 2009 for San Diego County, the CHP report said. Overall San Diego had 217 fatal traffic accidents in 2009.
