LONG BEACH, California – A 48-year-old Cal State Long Beach employee was killed Wednesday after attempting to crawl out of a struck elevator at the school’s Foundation building, school officials reported.

Cal-OSHA was at the scene of the elevator accident to investigate. Annette Lujan, of Huntington Beach, was alone on the elevator when it became stuck between floors. The elevator shifted downwards for unknown reasons and crushed Lujan as she was in the midst of her attempted escape.

Members of the Long Beach Fire Department’s Urban Search and Rescue team were called in to free the woman and spent more than an hour using a rope and pulley system to ply the elevator off.

Lujan has worked for the California Long Beach university for nine years, officials said.

“Tragically this elevator accident may have been avoided if the woman had remained in the elevator and called for help,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. “Stay calm if you are trapped in an elevator, call for help, sound an alarm, try pushing a button for another floor.”

Many people do not know what to do if they are trapped in an elevator, but yet we travel in them every day to get to our homes and offices. In the United States, roughly 325 million passengers are transported in elevators without incident on a daily basis, but regular maintenance must be performed to ensure those who ride in them are safe, Seegmiller said.

There have been cases where companies have not properly maintained their elevators and injuries can result. In such cases, an individual who is injured or killed may hold those responsible liable by filing a personal injury lawsuit or a wrongful death action against the responsible party.
