ESCONDIDO, California — A 67-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident Sunday in the 1000 block of East Lincoln Avenue, according to a San Diego Medical Examiner’s report.

The report said that Carlos Gomez, a resident of Escondido was crossing East Lincoln Avenue near North Beech Street at around 4 a.m. when he was struck by a driver who fled the scene.

According to the San Diego Union Tribune, police are looking for the driver who may have been driving a light colored, SUV or pickup truck with a camper shell. Police said a light on the vehicle was damaged in the accident.

Gomez was not killed at the scene of the accident but after complaining about pain he was taken to Palomar Medical Center where he died just a few hours after his arrival.

The coroner report said Gomez was married and lived with family in Escondido.

“This is another heartbreaking tale of someone being killed by a negligent driver,” Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm said. “What’s worse is the coward who hit Mr. Gomez didn’t even bother to stop to call for help.”

Seegmiller said the fact Gomez did not die at the scene is more evidence that if the driver had stopped Gomez may have received help sooner.

“When accidents happen this early in the morning, often times it takes several minutes before someone else calls for help,” Seegmiller said. “Those several minutes are crucial to someone who is seriously injured.”
