LAKE FOREST, California – A runaway dump truck whose brakes failed ran a red light Monday morning, crashed into two other vehicles on Lake Forest Drive and then rolled over in a nearby apartment building parking lot, according to an article in the Orange County Register.
The driver of the commercial dump truck reported to police that his brakes had failed prior to the 9:58 a.m. crash at Lake Forest Driver and Canada, the story said. The truck was going downhill at the time of the brake failure and struck a Ford truck and a compact car, pinning a passenger in the truck’s cab. Orange County Fire Authority rescue workers used the Jaws of Life to free the man who was then transported to Saddleback Memorial Medical Center for treatment of undisclosed injuries.
The crash caused a considerable fuel leak. Police are investigating the cause of the truck accident to determine whether there was a malfunction of the brakes or other mechanical failure.
“Drivers of trucks, cars and motorcycles are required under law to maintain their vehicles regularly to ensure they are safe for travel on our roadways,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm in Irvine. “Failure to properly maintain a vehicle that leads to the injury or death of another person is negligent under the law.”
