ANAHEIM, Calif. — A 5-year-old boy was attacked by a neighbor’s dog Monday resulting in serious injuries to his face, according to a report in the Orange County Register.
The incident occurred at around 1:45 p.m. and police and paramedics responded to an Anaheim residence where the attack happened, the report said.
The boy was taken to a hospital after suffering facial injuries from the dog described as a Labrador retriever mix. The attack happened in the neighbor’s house while the boy was there, according to Orange County Animal Care officials.
Officials said the dog was euthanized later that same day because the attack was so egregious however, the boy’s wounds are not life threatening. The report said the owners were not aware of the dog’s aggression.
“It’s heartbreaking to hear stories like this where children are the victims of such horrific attacks.” Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm said. “While the neighbor’s may not have known the dog was aggressive it is still their responsibility to ensure the safety of guests in their house.”
Many dog attacks occur despite a dog’s non-aggressive history for several reasons including, fear of threat from a victim, redirected aggression and running away from the dog, Seegmiller said. Often children will display what the dog takes to be aggressive action toward the animal causing it to attack.
