PERRIS, California – An unidentified woman was killed after her car was engulfed in flames as a result of being rear-ended by the driver of a sports utility vehicle on Evans Road near the Ramona Expressway, according to a press release by the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner office.
CAL FIRE/Riverside County firefighters arrived at the scene of the two-car traffic collision and extinguished the fire, but it was too late to save the woman who died at 6:16 p.m., according to a report by CAL FIRE/Riverside County fire department. There were no other reported injuries in the car accident.
The Ramona Expressway at Evans Road was shut down for roughly four to six hours following the car crash.
Riverside Car Accident Statistics
The city of Perris reported seven traffic fatalities and 162 people injured in traffic accidents in 2009, according to the California Statewide Integrated Traffic report. Additionally, there were 203 deaths and 7,974 injuries recorded in Riverside County traffic accidents in 2009, the report said. In California, fatal traffic accidents were down 12% to 2,715 deaths in 2010 compared to 3,090 killed in 2009, according to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Additionally, national statistics show that traffic fatalities have declined in recent years across the United States, down roughly 3% to 32,885 deaths in 2010 compared to 33,883 killed in 2009.
Typically the driver of the car that rear-ends another driver is deemed to be at fault for a rear-end car accident because drivers are required to drive at a safe distance to allow for sudden stops due to slowing traffic.
“These types of collisions are often the result of tailgating,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. “Also, rear-end collisions can be caused by distracted drivers who are not paying attention to the traffic ahead because they are using a cell phone, texting or engaged in other activities inside the car.”
The above car accident is under investigation by California Highway Patrol officers who will ultimately determine the cause of the crash and who they believe is at fault.
