SAN BERNARDINO, California (May 27, 2013) — Security guard Maria Luisa Peinado, 64, of Colton was killed Saturday night when she was crushed by a heavy steel security gate that fell off its track in the 5400 block of Industrial Parkway, according to a press release issued by the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner Department.
Peinado, a guard at Burrtec Waste Industries Inc., was reportedly attempting to put the gate back on its track by using a pry bar, but the massive gate toppled over and pinned her underneath. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.
The fatal accident is being investigated by the San Bernardino Police Department as well as CAL-OSHA.
“The company that owns this gate had a duty to properly maintain its property to ensure the safety of their employees and others,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “The family of this woman may have grounds for a wrongful death action against the company for the loss of her life while she was just doing her job.”
