HIGHLAND, California (Jan. 15, 2013) – Cipriano Mendoza Yanez, 83, of Highland was struck and killed by the driver of a minivan early Tuesday morning as he attempted to cross 3rd Street, just east of Tippecanoe Avenue, according to a news release issued by the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner Department.

About 1:10 a.m., Yanez was attempting to cross at an unmarked intersection when the driver traveling westbound on 3rd Street struck him in the No. 1 lane, according to the report.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and paramedics from the San Bernardino City Fire Department responded to the scene of the crash, but the man died shortly after their arrival at 1:31 a.m.

The Sheriff’s Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is working to determine liability as it investigates the circumstances surrounding the pedestrian accident.

“Pedestrians are especially vulnerable on our busy roadways,” Attorney West Seegmiller said.  “Motorists are required under California law to yield the right of way to them whether they are at a marked or unmarked crossing.”
