HEMET, California — Two women were killed after a driver attempted to evade police and struck a tree in Hemet on Tuesday, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.

Crystal Gray, 33 a resident of Hemet and her passenger Shelby Kraft, 21 also a resident of Hemet who was seated in the rear of Gray’s sedan were both killed around 2:30 a.m. while traveling on Whittier Avenue east of State St. in Hemet.

A third woman, whose name has not been released was critically injured in the crash that caused the car to catch fire, the Press Enterprise reported.

Police officials are still investigating why the driver fled after an officer stopped the car because it matched a car that was used in four drive-by shootings, the report said.

The chase reached speeds of up to 100 mph but police tried to back off because the driver was passing through intersections too fast and the police wanted to be safe. They later found the car that had crashed into a tree on fire, the report said.

If you or a loved one have been involved in an accident it is important you seek legal help during this difficult time.

Riverside Car Accident Statistics

There were 39 deaths and 370 injuries recorded in San Diego County pedestrian traffic accidents in 2009, according to the California Statewide Integrated Traffic report. In California, fatal traffic accidents were down 12% to 2,715 deaths in 2010 compared to 3,090 killed in 2009, according to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Additionally, national statistics show that traffic fatalities have declined in recent years across the United States, down roughly 3% to 32,885 deaths in 2010 compared to 33,883 killed in 2009.

“Indeed, news about someone being killed in a car accident is a tragedy for friends and family who are not anticipating the thought of losing a loved one,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. “Drivers who are negligent must be held accountable for their actions and provide assistance to these grieving families.”

If you are injured the insurance company may try to settle your claim quickly, but they do not have your best interests in mind. HEMET, California – An 18-month-old toddler Esmeralda Rios was ran over and killed Wednesday morning by a relative who was parking his 2002 GMC Yukon in a circular driveway, according to California Highway Patrol officials quoted in an article in the Press Enterprise.

Jeramie Salazar, 28, was parking the SUV in the front of the home in the 400 block of Mayberry Avenue when his right rear tire rolled over Rios and critically injured her, the article said. Paramedics arrived at the scene of the accident about 11:18 a.m. and rushed the girl to a local hospital where she died shortly thereafter at 11:49 a.m., according to a CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department press release.

According to the news story, the toddler’s mother is Salazar’s sister-in-law. The mother was holding the girl’s younger sibling in her arms with Esmeralda at her side prior to the accident and neither adult saw the girl walk away.

Police investigate every car accident involving a death to determine the cause of a crash. The driver and family of this child are obviously devastated by what has happened. However, the police will still have to obtain information for a police report whenever there is a death or serious injury involved in a car accident.

“Families of victims killed in car accidents not only have to cope with the loss of a loved one, but later their lives may be forever changed,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “My prayers are with this family as this is an incredibly tragic circumstance.”

In Hemet, there was a single motorcyclist death and 13 reported injuries to motorcyclists in 2009, according to the CHP report. Additionally, five people were killed in overall traffic accidents and 335 injured the same year. Also, Riverside County reported 31 deaths and 500 injuries to motorcyclists in 2009.

The investigation will seek to find out if either driver was under the influence of alcohol, distracted or if there were any circumstances that may have led to the crash that were illegal or reckless.

“Families of these victims killed in car accidents have lost a loved one and are forever changed due to both the emotional and financial loss,” said Seegmiller. “Drivers who make fatal mistakes must be held accountable for their actions.”
