DUBLIN, California (May 31, 2013) – A head-on car crash involving people with moderate injuries was reported Friday morning on the State Highway 84 between Palomares and Niles Canyon roads, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

About 8 a.m., the head-on car crash was reportedly blocking both lanes of the popular two-lane canyon highway that winds through steep, tree-lined slopes.

CHP officers called for a SigAlert after arriving at the scene of the crash involving at least two vehicles and blocking the eastbound lanes of Niles Canyon Road.

Indeed, the Niles Canyon Corridor, as it is known, is a deadly stretch of roadway and has been the backdrop to many fatal crashes. Just three weeks ago, another fatal head-on crashed between an SUV and a pickup truck shut down Highway 84 near Pleasanton Sunol Road.

In 2007, the roadway was named a State Scenic Highway, however, amid the beauty of this stretch of curving roads is a deadly history. According to a recent Road Safety Assessment conducted by the state of California, there were nine deaths and 177 injury crashes reported on Highway 84 between 2001 and 2010. A third of the deaths were due to alcohol-related accidents, the report said.

Speeding was reportedly a factor in 9 out of 10 of the crashes and half of the accidents were rear-end collisions on Highway 84 in the 10-year study, said Attorney West Seegmiller.

“Drivers traveling on Highway 84 need to be patient and only pass when it’s safe to do so,” said Seegmiller.
