RANCHO CUCAMONGA, California – Michael Ray Vega, 25, of Norco was struck and killed after the driver of a white pick-up truck struck the bicyclist on Foothill Boulevard just east of Ramona Avenue and fled the scene of the bicycle crash, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner report.
Vega, who reportedly worked at an Apple Store in Victoria Gardens, was traveling westbound on Foothill Boulevard about 6:40 p.m. when he was struck from behind by the vehicle. Several good Samaritans assisted the injured bicyclist as he lay struggling for his life alongside the roadway, police told the Los Angeles Weekly newspaper.
Despite wearing a helmet, Vega was unable to survive the impact from the large truck and died roughly an hour later at a nearby hospital, according to a Bikinginla.com news blog.
The driver, who witnesses say was a white male, failed to stop and render aid to the victim as he sped away from the wreck on the northbound lanes of Ramona Avenue, according to police.
Emergency workers arriving at the scene of the hit and run bicycle accident transported Vega to San Antonio Community Hospital where he died from his injuries about 7:20 p.m., the report said.
The Rancho Cucamonga Police Department is investigating this bicycle fatality. The vehicle is described as possibly a work truck with roof rack and or ladders on it.
Witnesses or those with information about the driver who fled the scene of the bicycle crash are asked to call police at (909) 477-2800.
“Indeed, drivers who flee the scene of a crash are both criminals and cowards,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “Under California law, this driver will likely be charged with felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter for his actions.”
Bicyclists are especially vulnerable to severe injuries and death if they are struck by vehicles on our busy roadways, Seegmiller said. Motorists should be alert for them and provide ample distance when passing a bicyclist to avoid a collision, he added.
