ORANGE, California – Hoang Nguyen, 43, of Orange, was identified today as the woman who was struck and killed Thursday morning by a Metrolink commuter train headed for Oceanside, according to coroner reports.
In what is being described as a suspected suicide, Nguyen, who would have turned 44 on New Year’s Day, was seen walking on the tracks about 6:30 a.m. at the Meats Avenue and Orange-Olive Road intersection, according to news reports.
Roughly 175 passengers were aboard the Metrolink train number 805 on the Inland Empire/Orange County line just north of Heim Avenue at the time of the crash. There were no reports of injuries to any other people.
Witnesses say they saw Nguyen walking on the train tracks facing the southbound Metrolink train head on leading police officials to believe this was not an accident, but an intentional suicide.
In an effort to prevent suicides by rail, many railway companies use closed caption television surveillance systems in areas where potential for suicide occurs so that police or security guards can possibly intervene quickly to prevent attempts at suicide. Efforts are also made to clear trees and bushes along tracks to help maintain visibility for engineers and fences help keep trespassers off the tracks.
Nationally, there are roughly 5,800 train crashes with vehicles annually and most take place at railroad crossings, according to the United States Department of Transportation. About 600 people are killed and 2,300 injured in these train accidents.
