DEL MAR, California — Motorcyclist Garrett McMillian Hughes, 35, of Encinitas was killed Saturday in a high-speed crash after he and another motorist were allegedly racing on Del Mar Heights Road Friday just before midnight, according to a San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office press release.
A multi-vehicle collision was set off when Hughes crashed his Harley Davidson Sportster into a white 1998 Honda Civic as he attempted to pass the stopped vehicle. He was ejected from the motorcycle and died at the scene of the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The Medical Examiner’s Office told CBS 8 news that the fatal accident may have been the result of racing.
The two occupants of the Honda Civic were unharmed a CHP report said, however, the motorcycle collided with a Mercury and that car crashed into a the rear of a Chrysler, according to the report.
A 21-year old El Cajon man, a passenger in the Mercury struck by Hughes’ motorcycle suffered minor injuries in the crash, the CHP said.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that almost 7 million aggressive or reckless driving accidents occur each year.
According to a 2010 Yahoo report, speeding-related crashes account for nearly $40.4 billion in annual costs to those involved with these accidents and claimed 11,674 lives in 2008. Motorcycle riders are often the victims of fatal accidents because of the common practice of weaving in between cars and speeding in heavy traffic
