INDIO, Calif. — Seven people suffered moderate to minor injuries after the sports utility vehicle they were riding in rolled over Sunday night in a crash on the Interstate 10 freeway, according to a CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire press release.
The accident happened at 6:21 p.m. on the eastbound Interstate 10 between Monroe and Jefferson streets, the report said. Victims were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of their undisclosed injuries including one moderate injury and six minor injuries the, report said.
According to a 2006 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study more than 60 percent of SUV crash fatalities were the result of a rollover.
While manufacturers have since had to make serious improvements to their vehicles to ensure less risk of a rollover, many older vehicles are still at significant risk of rolling over while at high speeds, the NHTSA reported.
In the early 2000s, Ford and tire manufacturer Firestone, both faced legal problems after the tires were proven to be defective and result in a high rate of rollover crashes.
While SUVs have become safer to drive over the years, there is still a higher risk for them to rollover compared to a compact size car or sedan.
Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm said that often these rollover crashes can be the result of manufacturer defects or components on the car such as faulty tires can contribute to these accidents.
“While newer SUVs have become safer, owners of older model vehicles may be open to serious risks so it’s important that car buyers review a car’s safety history and make repairs as necessary,” Seegmiller said.
Additionally, an automobile repair shop can be liable for a car accidents if faulty repairs were the cause of a crash, Seegmiller said.
