LA QUINTA, California –  Three young Coachella men are dead and one hospitalized with major injuries Saturday following a high-speed single-vehicle crash after the driver slammed into a palm tree on Avenue 52 just east of Madison Street, according to a press release issued by the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner Department.

Just after 1 a.m. on Dec. 29, 2012, driver Michael Garcia, 21, of Coachella was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the tree, the report said. Garcia and passenger Orlando Diarte, 20, also of Coachella died at the scene of the crash about 1:15 a.m.

A second passenger, Eric Ceballos was transported by ambulance to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital where he died at 3:12 a.m.

A third unidentified passenger suffered major injuries and was air-lifted by helicopter to Desert Regional Hospital in Palm Springs.

La Quinta Police Department responded to the fatal crash and determined the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and La Quinta Police Department would like to remind the public to celebrate responsibly over the New Year’s Eve Weekend, and that alcohol-impaired driving leads to serious injuries and deaths.

COACHELLA, California — Celia Miranda, 63, of Coachella died Saturday night after she was critically injured when a hit-and-run driver in an SUV struck her as she was crossing the street in the 84500 block of Avenue 49 just south of Harrison Street, according to a press release issued by the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner Department.

Miranda was transported by paramedics to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital where she later died at 6:10 p.m., the report said.

According to the report, the driver fled the scene of the pedestrian accident, but police were able to track her down  in the area of Harrison Street and Sixth Street. Sara Rojas, 30, of Coachella was booked into Riverside County Jail in Indio and faces felony hit-and-run charges, the report said.

INDIO, California — Ernest Morreo, 77, of Thermal, was struck broadside and killed early Friday night by another vehicle at the intersection of Jackson Street and 64th Avenue, according to a press release by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The fatal traffic collision was reported about 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Paramedics transported the injured man to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Indio where he died of his injuries about 8:22 p.m. the same night.

The city of Indio reported five deaths and 176 injuries in 2009 traffic accidents, according to the California Statewide Integrated Traffic report. Additionally, in Riverside County there were 203 deaths and 7,974 injuries in 2009 traffic accidents. In California, fatal traffic accidents were down 12% to 2,715 deaths in 2010 compared to 3,090 killed in 2009, according to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
