The Los Angeles Police Department will hold a Sobriety & Driver’s License Checkpoint tonight, Friday, April 13 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Ventura Boulevard between Tyron Avenue and the San Diego Freeway in Sherman Oaks

A second Sobriety & Driver’s License Checkpoint will take place on Hollywood Boulevard between Gower Street and Bronson Avenue in Hollywood from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday, April 14.

Additionally, the LAPD will conduct a DUI Saturation Patrol on Sunday, April 15, 2012 from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the 77th Street Area

“As an advocate for victims of drunk and drugged driving I applaud the efforts of Los Angeles Police Department officers to crack down on these drivers and remove them from the streets,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm.

Police typically conduct these sobriety checkpoints in order to reduce the number of people killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.

Officers will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment.  Officers will also check for proper licensing and will strive to delay motorists only momentarily. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

“Over the course of the past two years, DUI collisions have claimed approximately 30 lives and resulted in over 2,000 injury traffic collisions harming our friends and neighbors,” said Sergeant Karmody, Traffic Coordination Section.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), DUI checkpoints provide the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies. Also, this type of police enforcement  saves police departments about $6 for every $1 spent.  The location for the checkpoints is selected based on its ability to target the most drunk and drugged driving as well as to provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS).  “But that still means that hundreds of our friends, family and co-workers are killed each year, along with tens of thousands who are seriously injured. These checkpoints and DUI saturation patrols are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
