SAN DIEGO, California – Laura Hall, 65, of La Jolla was killed and four others injured Wednesday morning they drove northbound on the Interstate 805 freeway near Sorrento Valley Road on their way to spend the day at Disneyland in Anaheim, according to a San Diego County Medical Examiner report.

Hall was riding in the back of a 2003 Toyota RAV4 about 6:37 a.m. when a 2005 Nissan Altima struck the car on the driver’s side and it spun out of control, flipped over several times and slammed into the center divider.  The vehicle came to rest teetering on the edge of the freeway about 30 feet above a freeway construction zone. Construction workers moved a forklift into position to hold the vehicle in place until help arrived.

The family was rescued from the dangerous ledge by the efforts of the San Diego firefighters, California Highway Patrol officers and tow-truck workers.

According to news reports, the crash resulted after the driver of the Nissan was swerving to avoid being hit by another vehicle and it struck the Toyota RAV4.  A third vehicle, a 2011 Toyota Tacoma was also struck and veered into a guardrail.

Paramedics transported Hall to Scripps Memorial Hospital where she was diagnosed with several internal injuries and admitted to hospital. Later the same morning at 10:33 a.m. she died of her injuries. Hall had been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Hall’s son Brian D. Thomas, 43, of San Diego, was driving the Toyota and suffered several injuries in the crash including broken ribs, cuts, and bruises.  Also injured was his wife, Rebecca, 42, their son Bryan, 8, as well as Daniesha Thompson, 22, who all suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash.
