LOS ALAMITOS, California – A male passenger was killed and the driver seriously injured early Sunday night after the container truck they were traveling in went off the 605 freeway and crashed into a tree just south of Katella Avenue, according to a press release issued by the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department and news stories.
The truck driver was traveling southbound on Interstate 605 when for unknown reasons it drove off the road into a ditch and crashed into the tree in a solo-vehicle crash. The passenger died at the scene of the crash, but the driver was transported to a nearby Long Beach Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Initial reports of the 5:56 p.m. truck accident indicated the containers being carried inside the truck’s camper were marked as radioactive materials, but Orange County Fire Authority hazardous material handlers confirmed the contents was not radioactive. The containers instead were construction-related equipment.
