SAN DIEGO, California – After losing her leg and an arm after a vicious pit bull attack on June 18th this year, a 76-year-old Paradise Hills woman died on Christmas Eve months after the attack seriously injured her. The injuries were so severe that doctors amputated her left leg below the knee and her left arm below the elbow.
Emako Mendoza was attacked in her own backyard by a pair of pitbull dogs owned by next-door neighbors Alba Medina Cornelio, 39, and her daughter, Carla Ramirez Cornelio, 19. The dogs escaped through a hole in the fence between the two properties.
James Mendoza, 78, who has been married to Emako for 53 years, discovered his injured wife after his neighbors, the two Cornelios, knocked on his door to ask if he had seen the loose dogs.
The vicious dog owners were arrested following the dog bite attack on June 29 and charged with two counts each of felony mischievous animal that causes serious bodily injury as well as six misdemeanor charges including owning a dangerous dog. The pair, who both pleaded not guilty to the charges, each face up to three years in prison. They contend that the dogs were running from a swarm of bees at the time of the attack.
Both the pit bulls and their 3-week-old puppies were euthanized following the California dog bite attack.
There are more than 4.5 million Americans bit by dogs every year and roughly 50% of all of them were by Pit Bull, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
