MORENO VALLEY, California (April 28, 2013) – Sean Jones, 24, of Moreno Valley was killed Saturday night when another driver made a left-hand turn in front of him while riding on Moreno Beach Drive, according to a press release issued by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
About 9:11 p.m., Jones was riding his motorcycle northbound on Moreno Beach Drive near Bay Avenue when the driver of a Mercedes coupe heading southbound turned left into his path. The two vehicles crashed and Jones was thrown off the motorcycle into the roadway, police said. The Mercedes also crashed into a stopped GMC Yukon that was facing west on Bay Avenue, the report said.
Moreno Valley Fire Department paramedics rushed to the scene of the motorcycle accident and transported Jones by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he later died. The male driver of the Mercedes suffered minor injuries, but the woman driving the Yukon was not harmed.
The accident is under investigation by the Moreno Valley Police Department’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team who responded to the crash and has so far completed the initial investigation of the collision.
“Typically crashes involving a driver that makes a left-hand turn in front of a motorcycle are deemed to be at fault for the crash,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “The motorcycle rider always has the right-of-way over the driver who is turning left. My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of this young man who are learning about his wrongful death.”
Police are requesting that asking anyone who witnessed the accident contact the Moreno Valley Police Department Traffic Division at (951) 486-6900. After hours and on weekends the Department may be reached at (951) 776-1099.
