PALM DESERT, California — Jon Ely, 48, of Palm Desert was killed about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night when a truck made a left-hand turn in front of his motorcycle and the two vehicles crashed at the intersection of Indian Canyon Road and Tachevah Drive, according to a Riverside County Sheriff Coroner report.

Ely was riding his 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound on North Indian Canyon Drive, but he was struck down when the driver of a 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche turned left in front of him, according to news reports.  The male driver of the Chevrolet remained at the scene of the crash, but police have not released the man’s name. He suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The Palm Springs Police Department is investigating the crash to determine what happened to cause the motorcycle crash, however, initial indications confirm there was no alcohol involved.

Palm Desert Motorcycle Accident Statistics

According to the California Statewide Integrated Traffic report there were no fatal motorcycle accidents, but there were seven motorcycle injury crashes in Palm Desert in 2009.  Overall there were 213 injury traffic accidents in the city that year. However, there were 30 motorcyclists killed and 500 motorcyclists injured in crashes in Riverside County as well as 203 fatal and 7,974 injury crashes from all vehicles in the county in 2009.

Police investigate every motorcycle accident involving a death to determine the cause of a crash, said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. The investigation will seek to find out if any other drivers were involved, whether anyone was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they were distracted or if there were any circumstances that may have led to the crash that were illegal or reckless.

“Families of motorcyclists killed in traffic accidents not only have to cope with the loss of a loved one, but often they want to know what happened and obtain justice if there was negligence involved,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of The Seegmiller Law Firm.
