LOS ANGELES, California – A 57-year-old man was killed in a fiery crash early Thursday morning on the westbound Santa Monica Interstate 10 Freeway after his sports utility vehicle crashed near Robertson Boulevard, according to radio reports and an article in the Los Angeles Times.
California Highway Patrol officers issued a SigAlert due to the 2:40 a.m. car accident as traffic backed up on the freeway clogged with rush-hour commuters.
Paramedics responding to the scene of the crash reported that the man died at the scene, but his name has not been released until his next of kin is notified about the crash. Reports did not indicate whether other vehicles were involved or if there were any others involved in the crash.
In California, fatal traffic accidents were down 12% to 2,715 deaths in 2010 compared to 3,090 killed in 2009, according to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
