Both Sides of Interstate 5 Freeway are Closed Down Due to Fatal 3-Car Accident

SAN CLEMENTE, California (March 20, 2014) – One person is dead in a fiery 3-car crash Thursday afternoon that closed down both sides of the Interstate 5 freeway just south of Avenida Presidio,  according to a dispatch report by the California Highway Patrol.

About 12:57 p.m., CHP officials say the driver of a flatbed truck carrying wood hit two vehicles in the HOV and No. 1 lanes as well as the center divider. A brown pickup truck that was struck by the larger flatbed truck, was pushed over the center divider and it burst into flames, the CHP report said.

Paramedics responded to the crash, but one person died at the scene. Police issued a Sig Alert for the accident and temporarily closed down both sides of the freeway to traffic.

A police report is pending for this fatal crash.

SAN CLEMENTE, California –  Suspected drunk driver Julio Lopez, 23, was arrested after police say witnesses caught him fleeing the scene of a car accident that injured six people Saturday night in a collision involving five vehicles, according to a report in the Orange County Register.

According to the news article, the driver injured himself and five pedestrians in the 400 block of North El Camino Real. First the driver allegedly struck a parked vehicle and several other vehicles were hit in the 11:25 p.m. crash. Paramedics transported six victims including the driver to a local hospital.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reports traffic collisions involving drunk drivers killed more than 10,000 people in 2010 or roughly 31 percent of all traffic-related deaths in the United States, said West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm.

“This averages one fatality every 51 minutes due to drunk driving,” Seegmiller said. “While the numbers are staggering, deaths from drunk drivers were actually down nearly 5% in 2010 compared to 2009.”

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, in California some 791 people died because of drunk drivers out of a total of 2,715 people who were killed in traffic accidents in the state in 2010. Additionally, there were 32,885 people died in traffic accidents nationwide, NHTSA reports.

SANTA ANA, California—Jared Ray Hale, a 25-year-old Marine, was charged with vehicular manslaughter Wednesday in the deaths of his three friends and fellow Marines.

Hale is charged with three felony counts of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated without gross negligence, according to an Orange County District Attorney’s press release. Hale also faces sentencing enhancements for driving with a blood alcohol level over 0.15 percent.

Hale, who is currently in a medical rehabilitation facility, faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison if convicted, Orange County District Attorneys’ officials said in a statement.

According to the statement, Hale and three fellow Marines—Christopher Arzola, 21; Jeremiah Callahan, 23; and Jason Chleborad, 22—arrived at Hennessey’s Tavern in Dana Point at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 13.

After leaving the bar at 1:50 a.m., Hale is accused of driving away in his Dodge sedan with his friends as passengers. About 10 minutes later, Hale is accused of losing control of the sedan at the intersection at Terra Vista. The vehicle ran over a landscaped median and crashed into a tree on the passenger’s side, said district attorney’s officials.

Callahan and Arzola suffered multiple blunt force injuries and were pronounced dead on the scene. Chleboard was taken to Mission Hospital, where according to officials, he was pronounced dead later that morning.

Hale was treated for brain trauma and a fractured arm at Mission Hospital. Just one hour after the crash, police tested Hale’s blood alcohol at 0.16 percent– twice the legal limit. Hale’s attorney told the Orange County Register that witnesses say Hale had not been drinking and that the crash was caused by the weather.

“My heart goes out to the victims’ families and the men who served alongside them in the Marines,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “There is no excuse for drunk driving and those who drive their vehicles while under the influence are not only financially liable for injuries or deaths, but they also have to carry the guilt of what they have done.”
