SAN DIEGO, California  –  A San Diego man stabbed and killed a pit bull dog Sunday night after the animal began attacking him while he was walking his own dog in the City Heights neighborhood, according to the Associated Press.

Both the man and his dog were bitten during the pit bull attack, but the injuries were minor and there are no pending charges against the pit bull’s owner. The pit bull managed to go back to its home after it was severely injured, but it died at the veterinarian’s office a short time later.

“Sadly the owner of the pit bull dog never should have allowed his animal to run loose because the victim anticipated a vicious attack by the dog and responded back the only way he knew how to protect himself and his own dog,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of a San Diego Personal Injury law firm.  “These types of dogs have a bad reputation and owners must be diligent to protect the public and the animal itself from harm.”

OAKLAND, California –  A 6-year-old girl was injured Thursday night after being attacked by a pair of unleashed Pit Bull dogs in a community garden near her home at University Village, a housing facility for UC Berkeley students, according to news reports.

The girl was attacked about 8 p.m. and she and her younger brother were walking alone to use a restroom near the soccer fields by the garden. The dogs were pulled off of the girl after a nearby soccer player heard her cries for help and seized the animals described as weighting about 50 pounds each.

The child, who was attacked on Jackson Street in Albany, was transported to Children’s Hospital Oakland where she was treated for multiple puncture wounds to her head, arms, legs and buttocks before being released, the report said.

Contra Costa Animal Control located the dogs a few days later at a home in Richmond after identifying the owner at which point they were taken into custody.

Under California Civil Code Section 3342, the dog owner in this situation may be held accountable for the actions of the dog: “The owner of any dog is liable for the damages suffered by any person who is bitten by the dog while in a public place or lawfully in a private place, including the property of the owner of the dog, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner’s knowledge of such viciousness.”

Roughly 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs every year and one in five dog bite injuries are serious enough to require some sort of medical attention, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Vicious dog attacks are common in the United States with more than 30,000 people undergoing reconstructive surgery as a result of them just in 2006,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of a Southern California law firm that specializes in handling cases involving victims of dog bites. “The wounds from a vicious dog bite may soon heal, but sadly victims may have physical and emotional scars that remain for years to come.”
