DANA POINT, California – An unidentified person was struck and killed Monday afternoon by a Metrolink train on the Inland Empire-Orange County line heading southbound on its way to Oceanside, according to news reports.
The No. 851 train, which departed from Riverside, struck the person on a stretch of tracks in between the train stations in San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente about 12:15 p.m. in the 35000 block of Beach Road, Metrolink officials told news reporters.
Roughly 30 passengers were on the train at the time of the train accident, but there were no injuries reported.
Nationally, there are roughly 5,800 train crashes with vehicles annually and most take place at railroad crossings, according to the United States Department of Transportation. About 600 people are killed and 2,300 injured in these train accidents.
Police investigate every train accident involving an injury or death to determine how the crash happened, said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm in Irvine. The investigation will seek to find out whether the train’s operators were following protocol, signal arms were functioning properly and whether the pedestrian was alert or was under the influence of alcohol, distracted or if there were any circumstances that may have led to the crash that were illegal or reckless including criminal activities.
“Families of victims killed in railway accidents not only have to cope with the loss of a loved one, but later their lives may be forever changed due to the loss of income and other costs,” said Seegmiller.
