SEAL BEACH, California –  A 55-year-old man was critically injured Monday night after a car crashed into the bus shelter where he was sitting on a bench on Seal Beach Boulevard near Pacific Coast Highway, according to several news reports.

Several witnesses called 911 to report the crash and Orange County Fire Authority rescue workers responded to the scene of the crash about 8:14 p.m. The man had to be freed from the mangled structure and suffered multiple wounds from the crash. He was transported by paramedics to a nearby trauma center for treatment of undisclosed injuries, but he was later updated to stable condition.

The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons, but the driver remained at the scene and was questioned and released by police pending the outcome of an investigation. Drugs and alcohol were not suspected, police told reporters.

Witnesses are asked to call Seal Beach Police Investigator Brad Davis at 562-799-4100, Ext. 1612.

“Distracted driving is one of the many causes of drivers losing control of their vehicles and police will likely investigate whether this driver was using a cell phone or not paying attention to his driving while behind the wheel,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “Hopefully this man will fully recover soon from his injuries.”
