VENTURA COUNTY, California – The driver of an SUV may have fallen asleep behind the wheel before veering off the road and crashing into a Fillmore Starbucks Wednesday killing a 30-year-old man who was pinned up against the doorway, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department officials said.
Police responding to the California car accident scene found the 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe inside the business at 650 Ventura Street.
“The vehicle broke through the east wall of the business, traversed through the customer lobby area, and came to rest inside at the front door,” police officials said in a press release.
Although police are still investigating the cause of the California car accident, they determined that the SUV driver Michael Cedarland crossed over two lanes of opposing traffic, jumped a curb and passed through a parking lot before crashing into the Starbucks cafe. Cedarland, 30, of Pasadena, may have lost consciousness. He told police he fell asleep at the wheel, but further investigation will be made to determine the actual cause of the car accident.
Sergio Mendez, 30, a former Marine and Iraq war veteran, died of serious internal injuries and two other Starbucks patrons were injured in the California car accident. Mendez was freed from the wreckage after a heavy rescue by Ventura Fire Department workers. Mendez was then rushed by paramedics to the Ventura County Medical Center for treatment, but he died in surgery. The two other injured car accident victims Jose Iraheta, 25, of Lancaster, and Thomas Michaels, 73, of Piru, were treated at the scene and also at the hospital. The California fatal car accident took place about 7 p.m. on Highway 126, Sheriff’s officials said.
