RANCHO CUCAMONGA, California — Robert Guillen, 68, of San Bernardino, was killed and his passenger injured early Friday morning in a single-vehicle crash after his SUV veered off the roadway, struck a light pole and flipped over on to its roof on State Route 210 at Amethyst Avenue, according to a San Bernardino County Coroner press release.
According to police, the 1996 GMC Suburban driven by Guillen was traveling westbound on State Route 210 about 5:10 a.m. when for unknown reasons the vehicle drifted slowly to the right, crossed several lanes of traffic and struck a light pole. The impact with the light pole caused the SUV to flip over onto its roof into some ice plants on the shoulder of the road. The unnamed passenger was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center with minor injuries, according to the press release. California Highway Patrol officers are investigating the car accident to determine its cause.
According to the California Statewide Integrated Traffic report there were 7 fatal and 490 injuries reported due to traffic accidents in Rancho Cucamonga during 2009. Additionally, there were 223 people killed and 7,870 others injured in crashes in San Bernardino the same year.
Police investigate every car accident involving a death to determine the cause of a crash, said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. The investigation will seek to find out if either driver was under the influence of alcohol, distracted, tired or if there were any circumstances that may have led to the crash that were illegal or reckless.
“Families of victims killed in car accidents not only have to cope with the loss of a loved one, but later their lives may be forever changed due to the loss of income and other costs,” said Seegmiller. “Those sustaining injuries may need ongoing medical care or be permanently disabled due to a crash.”
