EASTVALE, (RIVERSIDE COUNTY), California — Three people are dead, including Nicholas Perez, who police say was the wrong-way driver whose SUV veered over into opposing traffic and struck a compact car head-on, according to a press release issued by the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Department.
Perez, 23, of Corona, was driving an SUV southbound on Interstate 15 about a half a mile south of 68th Street at the time of the crash about 1:42 a.m. His vehicle slammed head-on into a 2012 Honda Fit driven by a man with a female passenger. The two people in the Honda have not been identified. They both died at the scene of the tragic crash.
Perez was transported to Corona Regional Medical Center where he died of his injuries about an hour later at 2:38 a.m.
Police investigate every car accident involving a death to determine the cause of a crash in order to find out who is liable to the other party for damages, said Attorney West Seegmiller. The investigation will seek to find out if either driver was under the influence of alcohol, drugs or distracted by something such as a cell phone. Also, police are seeking to find out if there are circumstances that may have led to the crash that were illegal or reckless.
“Families of victims killed in car accidents not only have to cope with the loss of a loved one, but later their lives may be forever changed due to the loss of income and other costs,” said Seegmiller. “We all pay to have insurance to cover us in case there is an accident because the victims will need money for their medical needs and so many other financial losses.”
