EASTVALE, (RIVERSIDE COUNTY), California — Three people are dead, including Nicholas Perez, who police say was the wrong-way driver whose SUV veered over into opposing traffic and struck a compact car head-on, according to a press release issued by the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Department.

Perez, 23, of Corona, was driving an SUV southbound on Interstate 15 about a half a mile south of 68th Street at the time of the crash about 1:42 a.m. His vehicle slammed head-on into a 2012 Honda Fit driven by a man with a female passenger. The two people in the Honda have not been identified. They both died at the scene of the tragic crash.
Perez was transported to Corona Regional Medical Center where he died of his injuries about an hour later at 2:38 a.m.

Police investigate every car accident involving a death to determine the cause of a crash in order to find out who is liable to the other party for damages, said Attorney West Seegmiller. The investigation will seek to find out if either driver was under the influence of alcohol, drugs or distracted by something such as a cell phone. Also, police are seeking to find out if there are circumstances that may have led to the crash that were illegal or reckless.

“Families of victims killed in car accidents not only have to cope with the loss of a loved one, but later their lives may be forever changed due to the loss of income and other costs,” said Seegmiller. “We all pay to have insurance to cover us in case there is an accident because the victims will need money for their medical needs and so many other financial losses.”

INDIO, California – Pedestrian Ernest Clark, 84, Moreno Valley was struck by a semi-tractor trailer truck Tuesday night as he stood next to his stopped sports utility vehicle at the shoulder of the westbound Interstate 10 freeway near the Cactus City Rest Area east of Indio, according to a press release by the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner.

Clark was struck about 10:45 p.m. on the freeway just west of Frontage Road. Paramedics responding to the scene of the pedestrian accident transported him by Mercy Air Ambulance to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs where he died of his injuries about 12:40 a.m.

The report did not indicate why Clark was parked on the side of the road, but California Highway Patrol is investigating the pedestrian accident to determine what exactly happened.

“Pedestrians on freeways are extremely vulnerable to being struck by cars,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. “It’s always safest to remain in your disabled vehicle until help arrives at the scene whether you are on a freeway or other roadway.”

Police officers will gather evidence using photographs, skid marks and other calculations to determine how the accident happened and whether the driver or the pedestrian was at fault in this tragic crash.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Jan. 12, 12) – A 76-year-old bicyclist was struck by a brown SUV and seriously injured on Heil Avenue, west of Goldenwest Street, according to a Huntington Beach Police Department press release.

The bicyclist, a Huntington Beach resident, was transported to UCI Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. The 81-year-old driver of the 2006 Ford Explorer, also a resident of Huntington Beach, was not injured in the 11:40 a.m. crash, according to police.

Police are investigating the bicycle accident and are seeking the public’s help especially any witnesses that may have seen what happened.

There were 51,000 reported injuries to pedal cyclists and 618 were killed in 2010, according to statistics compiled by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
