HUNTINGTON BEACH, California – Crawford Reeves, 77, of Huntington Beach was killed early Thursday morning after his parked Chevrolet Impala was struck by the driver of a 2011 Dodge Ram tow truck at Springdale Street just south of McCarthy Drive, according to a report by the Orange County Coroner’s Office.

Reeves and his 13-year-old grandson were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The grandfather was transported by ambulance to UCI Medical Center in Orange for treatment of critical injuries, but he died about an hour later at 2:45 a.m. The teenager suffered minor injuries and the driver of the tow truck was not injured in the crash, according to news reports.

Huntington Beach Police Department officers are investigating the collision to determine exactly what happened.

Police investigate every car accident involving a death to determine the cause of a crash, Attorney West Seegmiller explains. The investigation will seek to find out if the tow truck driver was under the influence of alcohol, distracted or if there were any circumstances that may have led to the crash that were illegal or reckless.

“Families of victims killed in car accidents not only have to cope with the loss of a loved one, but later their lives may be forever changed due to the loss of income and other costs,” said Seegmiller.
