LAKE ELSINORE, California – Zachary Butcher, 20, of Lake Forest, died early Thursday morning and four others were injured in a single vehicle rollover crash on Ortega Highway State Highway 74, west Decker Canyon Road, according to press releases by the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner Department and Riverside County Fire Department.

According to the Riverside County Fire Department report one victim with moderate injuries and three including the driver with minor injuries were transported to local hospital for treatment and the Ortega Highway was closed down for several hours due to the crash.

Delbert Parada, 21, of Lake Forest, was the driver of the black 2005 Ford F-150 who lost control of the vehicle on Wednesday night about 11:45 p.m. Butcher was the left, rear passenger in the truck, the report said. He died at 12:16 a.m. Thursday morning at the scene of the crash.

A second vehicle, a 1999 Toyota Tacoma driven by Jose Balandran of Wildomar, smashed into the wreckage containing the victims just a minute after the pickup truck crashed, according a news report.

Police investigate every car accident involving a death to determine the cause of a crash, said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Orange County-based Seegmiller Law Firm. The investigation will seek to find out the driver was under the influence of alcohol, distracted or if there were any circumstances that may have led to the crash deemed to be illegal or reckless.

“When someone is killed in a car crash, relatives want to know how something like this happened and why it happened,” Seegmiller explains. “Families need answers in order to have closure and only a complete investigation into the circumstances will deliver that answer.”

BIG BEAR CITY, California – Leonor “Lily” De Coronado, 37, of Big Bear City, was killed and her teenage daughter injured after her car collided with the trailer of a dump truck trailer on State Route 18 east of Paradise Way, according to a coroner’s report.

Police say the driver of the Peterbilt dump truck was making a “sweeping left-hand turn” when the trailer left the right shoulder and struck the side of the mountain. The incident caused the gravel box to separate from the trailer’s frame and it came to rest in the opposing lane of traffic where it struck the 2005 Kia driven by “Lily Coronado” as she was also known.

Coronado’s 16-year-old daughter was airlifted to a local trauma center with moderate injuries while her mother was transported to Bear Valley Community Hospital where she died from her injuries at 12:12 p.m.

“Indeed this case is one where the victim’s family should strongly consider a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver of this truck and his employer,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. “The truck driver’s actions are the proximate cause of this woman’s death and making such a turn on a busy highway was a risky move that shows he did not exercise due care behind the wheel.”

Under California Civil Code section 1714, “Everyone is responsible, not only for the result of his willful acts, but also for an injury occasioned to another by his want of ordinary care or skill in the management of this property or person …”

The number of fatal crashes involving large trucks was up 8.7% in 2010 across the nation, according to recent statistics compiled by the National Highway Transportation Safety Association. There were a total of 3,675 people killed in 2010 compared to 3,380 a year before, the report shows.

The families of victims of fatal car crashes caused by negligent drivers should be compensated for the loss of their loved one to help them pay for not only funeral costs and medical expenses, but for the loss of income that loved one would have provided to their family.
