SAN DIEGO, California — They were mothers, daughters, fathers and sons. Some were former Cub Scouts. Others had recently been married or had just welcomed their first child into the world. Some were police officers just doing their jobs.

None of them expected to became victims of car crashes, caused by careless drunk drivers. Many of these drunk drivers were people who should never have been behind the wheel of a car. Some were unlicensed. Others were too young to drink in the first place. Many had been out drinking and driving many times before the crash. Indeed, if it were not for their senseless acts, none of these mothers, brothers, sisters, and friends would have been here today to walk and honor the victims of these drivers.

Hundreds of family, friends and coworkers gathered Saturday morning at the annual Walk LIke MADD 5K walk and fundraiser at the NTC Park on Cushing Road. They were here because they don’t want to ever forget their loved ones. They want to share their stories with others who like them have suffered an unimaginable loss. They also are here because they haven’t given up hope and they want to finally put an end to drunk driving.

“Prevention is the key to putting an end to drunk driving,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “No one should have to die because of a drunk driver. Call and report anyone you think is driving drunk. Stop you friends from getting behind the wheel if you suspect they have been drinking. Everyone should do their part.”

Photographs of those being honored — including one young man pictured with his wife on their wedding day — graced the backs of dozens of walkers. A Victim’s Tribute booth also featured posters of those lost. Tributes to who they were. Retelling the story of their lives and sharing memories.

“It’s all about supporting these families and raising money to help others who are touched by future tragedies,” Seegmiller said. “Many of my clients are victims of drunk drivers or have lost a loved one due to this criminal act. Mothers Against Drunk Driving steps in to help those victims and their families after a tragic accident.”

The event featured various booths including a California Highway Patrol, SWAT displays and a K-9 police dog demonstration, kids booths and radio personalities.

West Seegmiller, founder of Southern California’s top personal injury law firms and host of the West of Legal radio show on KFWB News Talk 980, has begun fundraising to help support Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).  MADD is a non-profit organization founded in 1980 in Sacramento by Candace Lightner, a mother whose 13-year-old daughter was a pedestrian killed by a repeat drunk driver.

“We are proud to participate in such a worthy cause because we believe it’s important to raise awareness about the dangers and risks of drunk driving,” Seegmiller said. “Saving lives by preventing drunk driving is an honorable mission and we are glad we can be a part of this rewarding experience.”

Every Sunday this month, West Seegmiller has been asking his listeners on “The West of Legal” show to like his firm’s Facebook page. Mr. Seegmiller has pledged to donate $1 for every like on his Facebook page this month to MADD at this year’s event. Additionally, the Seegmiller legal team and their families are participating at the annual Walk Like MADD event held at 10 a.m. on November 10, 2012 in San Diego. Listeners are also invited to join the Seegmiller team on the walk.

The San Diego Walk Like MADD fundraiser will directly support local families and survivors of drunk drivers through various programs including offering emotional and legal support to victims and their families, providing equipment to local police to help them arrest drunk drivers and working to help influence state and local legislators to adopt stricter laws against drunk drivers.

According to MADD, an estimated one in three people are involved in an alcohol-related crash at some point in their lifetime. Here are some more statistics from MADD’s website (www.madd.org):

  • Almost half of all drivers who were killed in crashes and tested positive for drugs also had alcohol in their system
  • About one-third of all drivers arrested or convicted of driving while intoxicated or driving under the influence of alcohol are repeat offenders.
  • Among persons aged 12 or older, males were more likely than females (15.1 vs. 7.9 percent) to drive under the influence of alcohol in the past year.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) –  Police arrested R&B singer and repeat drunk driver Bobby Brown on suspicion of driving under the influence early Wednesday morning in Los Angeles after he failed a sobriety test when he was pulled over at Ventura Boulevard and Corbin Avenue in Tarzana, according to several news sources.

About 1 a.m., the 43-year-old former husband of late singer Whitney Houston, was allegedly seen driving unsteadily. Police pulled him over and subsequently arrested on DUI charges, according to news reports.

Brown was convicted on DUI charges in March in Tarzana. He pleaded no contest and was subsequently sentenced to three years of probation, given a fine and required to complete a three-month alcohol education program.

In 1996, Brown was arrested on DUI charges after a high-speed police chase that ended when he crashed his Mitsubishi, resisted arrest and urinated in the backseat of a police car. He spent eight days in jail after this arrest.

Drunk Driving Statistics

According to Mothers Against Drunk Drivers there are roughly 2 million repeat drunk drivers on our nation’s roadways at any given time and every 52 minutes someone is killed by a drunk driver.

Statistics such as these are just one reason why Attorney West Seegmiller has pledged to make a difference by supporting MADD this year.

SAN DIEGO, California – Four people were injured including the suspected drunk driver who was behind the wheel of a car that crashed into a residence on Kalmai Street in the Banker’s Hill area early Thursday morning, according to a report by 10News.com.

At a time when many people were heading home after Fourth of July celebrations, emergency workers were called to rescue the victims who were initially trapped in the vehicle. Police believe the victims were all drinking prior to the crash.

Following the 2 a.m. crash, paramedics transported the victims to a nearby hospital for treatment of undisclosed non-life threatening injuries.
