Grey’s Anatomy Star Patrick Dempsey Rescues Weston Masset, 17, After Malibu Car Crash

Monday, April 30th, 2012

MALIBU, California — Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey became a real-life hero to a 17-year-old boy whose car flipped over several times and crashed into the front yard of the celebrity’s Malibu home last week, according to an ABC News story.

Weston Masset, 17, was trapped upside down inside his silver Ford Mustang car, but Dempsey grabbed a crowbar and freed him from the wreck and then called paramedics to the scene of the single-vehicle crash. Masset recognized Dempsey and asked him “Are you famous?” Dempsey replied “Yeah I’m a doctor.”

Indeed, Dempsey, 46, plays the fictional neurosurgeon Dr. Dereck Shepherd on television, but his skills must have rubbed off him enough to act quickly and save the teenager. While paramedics were tending to the teenager, Dempsey called the boy’s mother Mary Beth Masset on the telephone and told her what happened.

Mary Beth Masset asked if he was a paramedic and he replied “No, this is Patrick Dempsey.” She told reporters she thought to herself “McDreamy?” Later he called her a second time to check to see how the boy was doing.

Weston Masset suffered a mild concussion and an eye injury in the Malibu car crash and is expected to recover from his injuries.

ENSENADA, Mexico – The bodies of three veteran sailors were recovered from the ocean Saturday after their yacht the Aegean crashed for unknown reasons during the annual 124-mile Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race, according to a report by the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office.

William Reed Johnson Jr., 57, of Torrance, Joseph Lester Stewart, 64, of Florida and a third man identified in news reports by his wife as Kevin Rudolph, 53, were all found in a debris field in the ocean off the coast of northern Mexico at compass coordinates: N 32 44 532, W 117 29 999. A fourth sailor remains missing and has not been identified.

Early reports indicate that the yacht may have crashed into another larger vessel as the only thing left of the 37-foot yacht was small pieces. The race is run on a shipping route where large freighters travel and it’s possible one may have hit the yacht without being aware of it, news reports said.

The sailing competition, organized by the Newport Ocean Sailing Association comprised of 213 yachts this year and this was the first fatality recorded in the 65 years since it started.
