Bicyclist Donald McCluskey Killed in Three-vehicle Crash in Rancho Mirage

RANCHO MIRAGE, California – Bicyclist Donald McCluskey, 49, of Palm Springs was killed Wednesday afternoon when he was struck by a white 2010 Chrysler Town and Country mini-van that ran a red light and collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of Da Vall Drive and Ramon Road, according to a Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner press release.

According to the report, three vehicles and the bicyclist were involved in the crash. The mini-van drove northbound through a red light as it was driven on Da Vall Drive and was struck by the driver of a 1998 GMC Sierra pickup truck headed west on Ramon Road. The mini-van overturned after it was hit and slammed into McCluskey as well as 2010 black Nissan Murano, both who were stopped on the northwest corner of the intersection. The crash took place about 12:15 p.m.

Paramedics transported McCluskey to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment of severe injuries, but he died about an hour later at 1:40 p.m.

The driver of the mini-van was also transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries and is expected to survive. The drivers of the Nissan Murano and GMC pick-up truck walked away from the multi-vehicle crash with no reported injuries.

Additionally, the pickup truck driver Larry Wayne Goodman of Cathedral City arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence at the scene of the crash.

In California, fatal traffic accidents were down 12% to 2,715 deaths in 2010 compared to 3,090 killed in 2009, according to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Additionally, national statistics show that traffic fatalities have declined in recent years across the United States, down roughly 3% to 32,885 deaths in 2010 compared to 33,883 killed in 2009.
