SANTA MONICA: Three Dead in Small Plane Crash at Airport

Tuesday, October 1st, 2013

SANTA MONICA, California (Oct. 1, 2013) — At least three people are presumed dead Sunday night after the driver of a small plane crash landed at the Santa Monica Municipal Airport, according to a Reuters news report.

Witnesses say the twin-engine Cessna Citation 525A was in the process of landing when it crashed into a hangar and became engulfed in flames, the report said. All those aboard the aircraft were presumed killed, but no one on the ground was reportedly injured or killed in the crash.

The victims, who are not yet identified, were reportedly returning home from Idaho’s Sun Valley resort area. Initial reports indicated that Mark Benjamin, 63, was the pilot of the aircraft, but this has yet to be confirmed. Also, his son Luke Benjamin and his girlfriend were reportedly aboard the fatal flight.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the crash.

“This is certainly a tragedy for this family,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “My condolences go out to those who knew them as they cope with such a tremendous loss and attempt to piece together how this happened.”

SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA: Construction Company CEO and Son Believed to Have Died in Jet Crash

Monday, September 30th, 2013

SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA (September 30, 2013) – The CEO of a construction company called Morley Construction and his son are believed to have lost their lives in a jet crash that occurred at The Santa Monica Municipal Airport at about 6:20 p.m. yesterday.

Apparently the twin engine Cessna Citation plane, designed to hold up to ten passengers including crew, somehow veered off the run-way during its landing in Santa Monica. It then slammed into a hangar and bust into flames, according to The Federal Aviation Administration Spokesman, Ian Gregor.

A crane had to be used to lift debris and uncover any survivors. The crash is being described as “unsurvivable,” by Santa Monica Fire Department Capt. John Nevandro. The plane was flying in from Sun Valley Idaho, which is a popular area for celebrities and wealthy business people. More information will be forthcoming as the investigation continues.

Monday, July 8th, 2013

Asiana Airlines Flight 214 Investigation Begins Into Crash at San Francisco Airport

Sunday, July 7th, 2013

SAN FRANCISCO, California (July 7, 2013) — Survivors of Asiana Airlines Flight 214, which crash landed into the San Francisco International Airport Saturday, are being treated for injuries ranging from burns and fractures to internal injuries at various local hospitals, according to a Reuters report.

The San Francisco Fire Department and hospital officials told Reuters there were five people critically injured who were taken to San Francisco General Hospital and Stanford Hospital, another 49 people were being treated for serious injuries and about 132 with minor to moderate injuries.

Additionally, the two people who were killed in the tragic airline crash were identified as 16-year-old Chinese students Ye Meng Yuan and Wang Lin Jia who were sitting in the back of the aircraft.

Investigation into Asiana Airlines Flight 214

Federal investigators have already begun to collect evidence including cockpit voice and flight data recordings or “black boxes” to determine the cause of the July 6 Boeing 777 airplane crash.

Initial reports indicate that mechanical failure was not the cause of the accident.  The investigation will likely focus on pilot error and actions by those in the control tower. Indeed, witness reports say the pilot appeared to be flying too low and too fast as he approached the landing strip at the San Francisco airport. The aircraft ignited upon landing and passengers made a frantic escape as smoke engulfed it.

The agencies that are conducting the investigation include The National Transportation Safety Board, The Federal Aviation Administration and investigators who are on route to San Francisco from Korea.

“Typically the investigation will include various equipment and interviews with pilots and air traffic control officials as well as witnesses on the plane and the ground,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “
