IRVINE, California (March 14, 2013) – Three pedestrians have died in two separate car crashes in Irvine within days of each another.
The first pedestrian accident took place on Friday, March 8. A driver struck and killed Moshen Mirfakhraie, 90, of Irvine as he attempted to cross the road at the intersection of Trabuco Road and Monroe. A driver in a 2005 Toyota Camry was traveling eastbound on Trabuco and for unknown reasons struck Mirfakhraie. The driver remained at the scene of the fatal pedestrian accident and Irvine Police officers are investigating the circumstances that led to the crash.
Later on Tuesday, March 12, a 17-year-old high school student lost control of his Honda and struck and killed a local Irvine couple who were out on a walk on the sidewalk. It was about 7:30 a.m., pedestrians Sharon and Richard Crowell, 62 and 69 years old respectfully, were walking on Venta Spur Trail just north of Bryan when the boy on his way to school crashed into them.
Richard Crowell was critically injured and paramedics transported him to a local hospital where he died a short time after his arrival. Sharon Crowell was discovered beneath the debris and pronounced dead at the scene a short time after the crash.
The Irvine Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is conducting an investigation into the pedestrian crash to determine exactly why the teenager lost control of the vehicle. The roadway on Eastwood was closed down between Monticello and Gold Rush in order for police to investigate the collision.
Witnesses are asked to contact Sergeant Matt August at 949-724-7023.
