Road Closure on SR 78 at Old Julian Highway

EL CAJON, California  (Jan. 31, 2013) –  Two people were trapped and at least one was killed in a rollover car crash Thursday afternoon that closed knocked down power lines and blocked the State Route 78 at Old Julian Highway, according to a dispatch report issued by the California Highway Patrol.

About 1 p.m., the CHP reported there was an overturned vehicle in the westbound traffic lane and power lines were in the roadway due to a power pole that was knocked over during the crash.

The San Diego Gas & Electric were notified about the power lines about 1 p.m., however, more than an hour later the live wires were still preventing tow trucks and traffic from accessing the road. A SigAlert was issued at 1:07 p.m. and the roads were closed from Old Julian Highway to the 78 and 79 junction in Santa Ysabel, the report said.

“Power lines can be especially dangerous to anyone involved in a car crash because even if a person survives the accident they could be seriously injured or killed if they are in contact with live wires,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “Those responding to the emergency must also be careful they are not injured by these power lines as they assist those who are hurt.”
