SAN BERNARDINO, California — Gilbert Diaz Jr., 51, of Apple Valley was killed New Year’s Day in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 215 Freeway at Palm Avenue, according to a press release issued by the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner Department.
About 4:58 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2013, Diaz was driving his white Toyota van northbound on the I-215 near the Palm Avenue off-ramp when for unknown reasons he lost control of the vehicle as it veered off the roadway and rolled down the embankment.
During the crash, Diaz was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene about 5:22 p.m., the report said.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
“Police must conduct a complete investigation into the circumstances surrounding this car accident to determine who is responsible for the crash,” said Attorney West Thomas. “The investigation will include examining evidence to see if there was a mechanical failure and taking measurements to access whether a dangerous condition was involved.”
