OAK HILLS, California – (San Bernardino County) Jarod Alan Maxwell, 14, of Oak Hills was killed after being struck Thursday morning by a sports utility vehicle while he was riding his skateboard on Baldy Mesa Road, according to a report by the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner Department.

The driver of a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse was traveling northbound in the 7800 block of Baldy Mesa Road when he struck the teenager. Paramedics responded to the skateboard accident about 6 a.m. and transported the injured teenager to Desert Valley Hospital where he later died at 7:38 a.m. the same morning.

California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident to determine exactly what happened.

The skateboard accident is one of several tragedies involving young people in the past week in Southern California.

Four days ago, Nicholas Drew Royals, 22, of Ontario was struck and killed while riding his skateboard home from work on Sept. 10, the coroner reported.  Royals was riding on the southbound side of Benson Avenue south of Moreno Street in Montclair when the driver of a teal 1995 Nissan Sentra hit Royals from behind. The driver stopped at the scene and called 911, but Royals was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:57 a.m. The driver told police he did not see the skateboarder due to his dark clothing.

Also, on Sept. 7, in Laguna Niguel, police are still trying to find the driver who struck and killed Carlos Salas, 20, of Laguna Niguel while he was riding his skateboard about 3:48 a.m., according to the Orange County Sheriff Coroner Department.

The skateboarder was struck in the street about 3:48 a.m. by a driver who dragged him roughly 25 feet and then fled the scene of the crash. The vehicle was later abandoned less than a mile away, but they have not yet found the hit and run driver.

Fatal Skateboard Accidents in the United States
