Leonor “Lily” De Coronado Killed in Crash with Dump Truck Trailer

BIG BEAR CITY, California – Leonor “Lily” De Coronado, 37, of Big Bear City, was killed and her teenage daughter injured after her car collided with the trailer of a dump truck trailer on State Route 18 east of Paradise Way, according to a coroner’s report.

Police say the driver of the Peterbilt dump truck was making a “sweeping left-hand turn” when the trailer left the right shoulder and struck the side of the mountain. The incident caused the gravel box to separate from the trailer’s frame and it came to rest in the opposing lane of traffic where it struck the 2005 Kia driven by “Lily Coronado” as she was also known.

Coronado’s 16-year-old daughter was airlifted to a local trauma center with moderate injuries while her mother was transported to Bear Valley Community Hospital where she died from her injuries at 12:12 p.m.

“Indeed this case is one where the victim’s family should strongly consider a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver of this truck and his employer,” said Attorney West Thomas, founder of the Thomas Law Firm. “The truck driver’s actions are the proximate cause of this woman’s death and making such a turn on a busy highway was a risky move that shows he did not exercise due care behind the wheel.”

Under California Civil Code section 1714, “Everyone is responsible, not only for the result of his willful acts, but also for an injury occasioned to another by his want of ordinary care or skill in the management of this property or person …”

The number of fatal crashes involving large trucks was up 8.7% in 2010 across the nation, according to recent statistics compiled by the National Highway Transportation Safety Association. There were a total of 3,675 people killed in 2010 compared to 3,380 a year before, the report shows.

The families of victims of fatal car crashes caused by negligent drivers should be compensated for the loss of their loved one to help them pay for not only funeral costs and medical expenses, but for the loss of income that loved one would have provided to their family.
