LONG BEACH, California (July 29, 2013) — Taryn Hawk, 35, was killed and Joseph Daroza, 30, was seriously injured Friday when an SUV driver allegedly turned in front of their motorcycles causing a major collision, according to a dispatch report filed by the California Highway Patrol.
Just after 8:30 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of Second Street and Glendora Avenue in Belmont Shore after reports of a major accident between a 2005 Toyota Sequoia and two Harley Davidson motorcycles.
The SUV, driven by Nichola Limer, 68, of Long Beach, who owns McKenna’s on the Bay, was heading westbound when it attempted to make an unsafe left turn onto southbound Glendora Avenue directly in front of the motorcycles, who collided with the vehicle.
Hawk of Huntington Beach was pronounced dead at the scene. Daroza, also of Huntington Beach, was transported by paramedics to a nearby hospital, his condition is said to be improving.
According to reports, the Long Beach Police Department will ask the District Attorney to file criminal charges against Limer, who was not injured.
Detectives will present the case to the District Attorney’s Office for possible criminal charges, police said.
“As a motorcycle rider myself, I know firsthand the dangers of riding with other motorists and the inherent risks associated with bikes,” said Attorney West Thomas. “Indeed, my prayers are with the family and friends of the Hawks and Darozas, as they are now coping with the sudden loss of Taryn and trying to piece together what happened.”
