Two Dead, Two Injured in Solo Crash with Construction Equipment — File photo

Suspected DUI Driver Colin Powell Arrested After Crash into Backhoe on Potrero Road

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Sept. 10, 2013) –  Two passengers were killed, the suspected drunken driver and another passenger were injured late Monday night when the car they were traveling in crashed into construction equipment parked in front of a 60-acre private residence at 1601 Potrero Road near Newbury Park, according to a KABC News report.

Police arrested the driver Colin Powell, 23, of Newbury Park and he was was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and reports say that speed may also have been a factor in the crash. The Ventura Star reported the passengers who were killed were identified as Michael Hatcher, 26, of Newbury Park, and Aimee Hoff, 23, of Thousand Oaks.

About 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 9, police told reporters that paramedics rushed to the scene of the crash involving two men and two women on this two-lane roadway in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The vehicle had crashed into a backhoe and other construction equipment that was parked on the side of the narrow roadway in an upscale neighborhood known as Hidden Valley. Two of the passengers died  at the scene of the car accident, but the driver and a 21-year-old Newbury Park woman were transported by ambulance to Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks with moderate injuries, the Ventura Star reported.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the car accident to determine if any other factors were involved in the crash. Although DUI charges have been filed against the driver, the report will likely look into whether the construction equipment was legally parked in a safe location and properly marked to alert drivers.

“There are truly no words that can lift the burden of grief and sorrow the family and friends of these individuals are experiencing right now,” Attorney West Seegmiller said.  “The thoughts and prayers of our entire family are with them family and friends.”

BARSTOW: Santa Ana Girl, 10, Killed in Rollover Crash on I-15 Freeway at Afton Canyon Road

Monday, August 5th, 2013

BARSTOW, California (August 5, 2013) – A 10-year-old Santa Ana girl was killed Sunday morning when the SUV she was riding in overturned on the northbound Interstate 15 freeway near Afton Canyon Road in a rural area of Barstow, according to a press release issued by the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner Department.

About 9:23 a.m., the Orange County child was a passenger in the 2000 Lincoln Navigator heading northbound on the freeway. The left-rear tire of the SUV experienced tire separation and the driver lost control of the vehicle. The SUV rolled over at least one time, the report said.

Barstow CHP officers are investigating the crash to determine liability for the crash.

“There are many factors involved in a fatal car crash including whether the vehicle was properly maintained, manufacturer’s defects, dangerous road conditions, involvement of other drivers and more,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “My condolences go out to the family of this young girl as they cope with her sudden loss and try to piece together how this could have happened.”

CULVER CITY: Motorcyclist Injured in Crash in HOV Lane on 405 Freeway at Washington Blvd.

Friday, June 14th, 2013

CULVER CITY, California (June 14, 2013) —  A motorcyclist was injured Friday morning when a driver in a black sedan made an illegal entry into the HOV lane and the biker crashed into the vehicle on the northbound Interstate 405 freeway at Washington Boulevard, according to a dispatch report issued by the California Highway Patrol.

About 7:30 a.m. on June 14, 2013, CHP officers reported that several vehicles were involved in the crash in the HOV and the No. 1 lane. A witness called 911 to report they saw the black vehicle enter illegally into the HOV lane prior to the crash, the report said.

“Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable to injury or death during the busy morning commute on our Los Angeles freeways,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “Hopefully this rider is not seriously injured.”

The Culver City Fire Department was called to the scene of the crash and paramedics treated the injured rider at the scene, but it was not clear the extent of the injuries or whether the motorcyclist was taken to hospital.

Three DUI Drivers Arrested in Riverside County: Palm Desert and La Quinta Car Crashes

Monday, June 10th, 2013

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, California (June 10, 2013) – Police arrested three DUI drivers on Sunday in separate incidents across the county including two in Palm Desert and one in La Quinta, according to the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner Department.

Starting at 6:06 p.m., Palm Desert Police reported to the scene of a solo vehicle hit-and-run car crash at 73750 Country Club Drive. Susan Smith, 52, of Palm Desert allegedly was driving a black Honda sedan eastbound on Desert Greens Drive when she failed to negotiate a turn in the road and drove onto a planter in the median.

There were no injuries reported in the car crash, but the incident caused minor property damage and police say Smith fled the scene. Police tracked her down and she was found hiding in the backyard of her neighbor’s home. Smith was booked into the Riverside County Jail in Banning.

Also, in Palm Desert at 11:34 p.m., the Palm Desert Police responded another DUI driver. This involved a single vehicle minor-injury rollover traffic collision on Highway 74 at Thrush Drive. Carrie Percival, 38, of Palm Desert was driving her tan Ford Explorer northbound on Highway 74 when the car struck the east curb and went off the road where it overturned before coming to a stop on Frontage Road, the report said.

A Palm Desert Police officer noticed Percival appeared to be under the influence of a stimulant and she was also injured. She was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment and it was determined she was under the influence of drugs. Police charged her with DUI and drug possession.

Witnesses to either of these two incidents are asked to contact the Palm Desert Police Department’s Traffic Division at 760-836-1600.

Finally, in La Quinta, about 7:06 p.m., the La Quinta Police Department responded to the scene of the car crash at Washington Street and Ave. 48.

Manuel Contreras, 31, of Coachella had suffered minor injuries after he crashed his Ford Mustang  into a curb and then a tree on the west side of the roadway. Police say Contreras failed to negotiate a left-hand turn onto the southbound lanes of Washington Street.

Police determined that Contreras was under the influence of alcohol. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries and police arrested him for DUI.

Witnesses are asked to contact the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, at (760) 863-8990, or they can call in anonymously at (760) 341-STOP (7867).

“Victims of drunk or drugged drivers applaud the Palm Desert and La Quinta police department for their efforts to make our Riverside roads safer by arresting these DUI drivers,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, a supporter of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. “Despite efforts to raise awareness of dangers of drunk driving there are still far too many of them on our roadways who are responsible for injuries and deaths of many victims.”
